A Fresh Start in the Heights
Every project has a story, and this Heights bungalow is all about breathing new life into a well-loved home. The owners—a busy, active family of four—needed their space to keep up with real life. They’re planning an expansion in a few years, so our goal was to focus on the parts of the house that wouldn’t be touched by future construction, making every update count.
Original Craftsman Facade
The kitchen was the biggest challenge. While it will change down the road, it simply wasn’t working for the family right now—especially since the wife is an avid cook. We had to get creative, working within a budget and a tight footprint to improve storage, flow, and function. The result? Gorgeous, custom-built shaker style cabinetry, plenty of clever storage solutions, and a kitchen that feels both inviting and practical for the years ahead.
One of the owners is a children’s book author and an avid reader, so we made space for her favorite books—including her own—by creating an open, thoughtful display. Throughout the house, we had to be intentional about every path of travel, maximizing seating and storage in a way that still let the space breathe and feel like home.
The husband dreamed of a gas fireplace, and in one of those perfect moments of serendipity, we discovered a stunning piece of stone leftover from the previous owner’s renovation. It became the centerpiece for a brand-new fireplace surround—one that feels like it’s always been part of the home.
Design-wise, I was inspired by the original Art Deco elements already present, like the archway molding. Instead of fighting against them, we leaned in and gave them a modern twist, letting the past and present come together in a space that’s truly personal and ready for whatever the future brings.
More to come! Beto has the coolest bed of all time ahead!
